Saturn, the grim reaper, rules responsibilities, restrictions and limitations you
are apt to encounter, and the lessons you must learn in life. He does not deny
or diminish imagination, inspiration, spirituality, or good fortune, but he does
demand that these things be given structure and meaning.
The karmic lessons we have come to experience and overcome in this lifetime
are expressed by Saturn. He spends around two and a half years in each sign,
taking about twenty-nine years on his journey through all the signs. Each
twenty-nine years naturally presents us with the challenge to rise to new levels
of awareness, or face the consequences of having failed to gain the wisdom
required so to do.
• Denotes necessity for obedience to law. Necessity is the mother of
invention.
• Teaches the value of labour, of patience, intelligence and economical use
of time and material.
• Without Saturn men would lack bones, teeth, hearing, hair and skin.
• Saturn protects and limits the soul till it is capable of leaving its earthly
conditions and entering its spiritual heritage.

In Fire signs
• Need to stabilize one’s identity and express creative energy with more
regularity and objectivity.
• Effort should be put into mastering the physical world and developing a
systematic approach.
In Earth Sign
• Needs to stabilize ones efficiency and precession in work and in
handling daily responsibility.
• Efforts should be put to mastering the physical world and developing a
systematic approach.
In Air Signs
• Need to stabilize one’s thinking and discipline one’s mind without
lapsing into negative thinking.
• Effort should be put into indicating clearly and practically as well as
effectively handling social responsibilities with sincerity while still
maintaining a detached perspective.
In Water Signs
• Need to stabilize one’s emotions and sensitivities, expressing feelings
while simultaneously developing more detachment from them.
• Effort should e put into expressing feeling with self-acceptance while
disciplining over-sensitivity.

Reciprocal and Non-Reciprocal Relationships

The Sun likes Mars, Jupiter and the Moon – and guess what? Mars, Jupiter and the Moon, from their side also return the feeling. They like the Sun. The Sun hates Saturn and Venus, and they too hate the Sun. These are reciprocal relationships.

The Sun however is merely “neutral” or “tolerant” of Mercury, while Mercury, from his side actually likes the Sun. This is a non-reciprocal relationship – and these are the ones which are really interesting and reveal a lot of information about life.

Who Hates Who?

There is also the big question of “who hates who?” Astrological texts are uniformly ambiguous on which planet is feeling what in the case of non-reciprocal relationships. However, the focal point of the sanskrit verse above, which is the basis for the friendship and enmity of the planets – is the planet itself, who owns the mooltrikona sign. Therefore the more certain interpretation is that the author, Parashara is talking about the feelings of that planet towards the other planets.

Indeed that interpretation makes better logical sense. For example, the Sun is the authority figure and the soul. Mercury is the intellect and free speech. There is a complex relationship between free speech and authority. Because mercury is intellect he likes the Sun. And free speech and speech itself also needs the support of authority/government and requires the illumination of consciousness. Thus from all angles Mercury likes the Sun. However Government is not fond of people who actually use their free speech, nor is authority fond of free thinkers. It does not hate such persons, but merely tolerates them on moral grounds.

Thus I personally draw my firm conclusion that it is Mercury who likes the Sun, and the Sun who merely tolerates Mercury – and not visa versa. This direction applies for all the non-reciprocal relationships.

The Moon’s Drama

The Moon is friendly towards Mercury and the Sun. The Sun returns the feeling, but not Mercury. In fact this is the most extreme non-reciprocal relationship in the zodiac. Mercury actually hates the Moon – though the Moon likes Mercury. Mythologically this is because Mercury is the illegitimate son of the Moon. He dislikes the father who seduced his mother. But the father still likes his son, illegitimate or nor (especially since the “father” in this case is actually a feminine being – the Moon, and thus has motherly affection).

The Moon hates no one, in fact. She is a planet very desirous of being shown affection and love – therefore she accepts such things happily from anyone, and does not cut anyone off as an “enemy.”

But the Moon likes some planets less than others. Mars, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn she is neutral towards. None of them return the neutrality. Thus the Moon has the most complex and non-reciprocal relationships of any planet. This is extremely interesting because the Moon is the archetype woman, and complexity of relationships is a hallmark of the female gender.

Mars, for example, likes the Moon. This is because passion and energy loves the desire and emotion of the mind. But the Moon merely tolerates Mars because too much passion is difficult for her and confuses her emotions.

Venus on the other hand dislikes the Moon. The Moon is the female authority figure, and Venus is fundamentally anti-authoritarian due to her strong affection for Saturn. The artist (Venus) does not like authority figures, not even female ones (the Moon).

The Moon tolerates Jupiter, but Jupiter really likes the Moon. This shows the exalted nature of Jupiter. He is forgiving and learns his lessons thoroughly. The Moon seduced his wife (and thus Mercury was born). But Jupiter learned his lesson that he bored his wife due to having no emotional depth to his ritualistic and dogmatic attitude towards religion and morals. So he realizes that he truly needs the Moon to improve himself and thus Jupiter likes the Moon. This shows that religion truly needs sincere deep emotion and must seek it out, even though sincere emotion tends to merely tolerate religion, due to its being encrusted in so much stuffy dogma.

The Moon tolerates Saturn, but Saturn (opposite of Jupiter) dislikes the Moon. Saturn hates authority figures and that is that. The moon is better than the Sun, maybe – but still, he doesn’t like her.

Mercury’s Moods

We already talked about the interesting non-reciprocal relationship between Mercury and the Sun and the Moon. The other planet Mercury favors is Venus. And she reciprocates in kind.

Mercury is neutral towards Mars, but Mars hates Mercury. This illustrates the principle that the police and military (Mars) hate free thinkers (Mercury), but free thinkers tolerate the police and military because they intellectually understand the need for them, even to protect their own rights to free thinking.

Mercury is neutral towards Jupiter. Jupiter however, dislikes Mercury. Free thinking intellectuals continuously embarrass religion, in the same way that a bastard son (Mercury) embarrasses a father (Jupiter). Still free throughout is open/neutral towards religion and tries to develop it into theosophy and philosophy.

Mercury is neutral towards Saturn, but Saturn actually likes Mercury. Saturn is the anti authority and therefore encourages free communication and free thinking. However, Saturn is so intense about being against all authority, it turns Mercury off a bit. Mercury is lighthearted. So Mercury can merely tolerate Saturn, not actually be fully friendly.

Venus’ Consorts

Venus is a friend to Mercury and Saturn, and they both return the feeling. In fact Venus’ relationship with Saturn is among the strongest and most steadfast in the sky – similar to the strong bond between Mars and the Sun. The two planets are perfect for one another. Complimentary opposites with common goals.

Venus hates the Moon and Sun, because the artist dislikes authority figures. We’ve already discussed how the Sun returns the feeling, but the Moon tolerates Venus’ dislike with neutrality.

Venus is neutral to Mars and Mars is neutral to Venus. This is the male-female dynamic in a nutshell. Men and women can’t live with each other, nor can they live without each other. There is a dynamic, mutual neutrality here.

Venus is neutral to Jupiter, but Jupiter dislikes Venus. Here we see an example of how Venus is actually more benfically inclined than even Jupiter. Sensuality, love and peace can see the value in philosophical, religious and moral things – and can therefore tolerate the rest that comes with it. Thus you have a lot of wonderful works of art sponsored by religion. But there are probably even more such wondrous works that have been censored by religion. Because though the artist tolerates religion, religion dislikes the artist and expresses that in censorship.

Mars

We have already discussed all the relationships pertaining to Mars, except his relationship to Jupiter and Saturn. Mars and Jupiter are friends with one another: energy and passion needs guidance (Jupiter) and it knows it. Also Mars being the enforcing agents (police and military) Jupiter is a sort of orders to enforce, morality. So there is mutual friendship. Between Mars and Saturn, Saturn is the anti-authority and so dislikes the enforcement and command tendency of Mars. But Mars somewhat appreciates the tenacity and practicality of Saturn, in whose sign he exalts. So Mars is neutral towards Saturn.

Jupiter

We have expressed every relationship of Jupiter except his mutual neutrality with Saturn. Saturn – finality and Jupiter – religion/morality are locked in a relationship they can’t get out of despite everything else about them being opposite. Therefore they tolerate one another.

It is noteworthy that no planet dislikes Jupiter… even the ones who are sometimes mistreated by him (Mercury and Venus). This shows how likable Jupiter really is – all about positivity and good deeds. He is a very delicate person in how he deals with others, even when he is actually doing them ill. This delicate demeanor causes no planet to be capable of outright enmity with Jupiter.

Saturn

As usual, Saturn gets jilted. We have already explained all his relationships before even getting to him.
