वैशाख मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की चतुर्दशी को नृसिंह जयंती के रूप में मनाया जाता है. भगवान श्री नृसिंह शक्ति तथा पराक्रम के प्रमुख देवता हैं, पौराणिक मान्यता एवं धार्मिक ग्रंथों के अनुसार इसी तिथि को भगवान विष्णु ने नृसिंह अवतार लेकर दैत्यों के राजा हिरण्यकशिपु का वध किया था.

हिन्दू पंचांग के अनुसार नरसिंह जयंती का व्रत वैशाख माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की चतुर्थी तिथि को किया जाता है. पुराणों में वर्णित कथाओं के अनुसार इसी पावन दिवस को भक्त प्रहलाद की रक्षा करने के लिए भगवान विष्णु ने नृसिंह रूप में अवतार लिया तथा दैत्यों का अंत कर धर्म कि रक्षा की. अत: इस कारणवश यह दिन भगवान नृसिंह के जयंती रूप में बड़े ही धूमधाम और हर्सोल्लास के साथ संपूर्ण भारत वर्ष में मनाया जाता है.
